地政学的強国の周縁として、幾度も統治者が入れ替わってきた台湾。
日本による植民地支配、戦争、戒厳令、そして民主化── そのたびごとに、台湾の人々は「自分たちは何者であるのか」を問い直さざるを得なかった。
写真集『Becoming・Taiwanese』において、写真家・曹良賓は、そうした台湾の歴史を最も象徴的に体現する場所「忠烈祠」に向かって最敬礼を行う人々に無自覚に身についている習慣的所作を記録し、頭部が見えなくなる姿勢を通じて、 植民地支配の影響を受けた建築が内包する権力的空間をあらためて見つめ直す。
「忠烈」を讃える国家的祭祀の場でありながら、その多くは、かつて日本統治時代に建立された神社の跡地に建てられている。
国家の名のもとに祀られながら、島そのものが背負ってきた歴史的トラウマには、容易に応答しえない空間でもある。
日本統治時代および国民党政権時代のポストカードや常民写真、文献資料などを再構成し、そして撮影の身体的な行為から、死者と生者、神聖と世俗、国家と個人のあいだに張りつめる緊張関係を浮かび上がらせる。
本書の折り込まれたページをめくると、強いられた信仰と規範化された忠誠との記憶の重なりが立ち現れ、忠烈祠は「宙づりにされた空間」となる。それは、記念の場であると同時に忘却の場であり、歴史に属しながらも、いまだ完結していない場所でもある――まさに「台湾人になること（Becoming Taiwanese）」という意識と、そのための過程そのものを本書は表わしている。
そして、小社がこの一冊を刊行すること自体にも、歴史との対話が込められること、その先に新たな思考と対話が開かれることを願っている。

The book Becoming Taiwanese comprises two bodies of works: Imaginarium and As Ritual. It also incorporates historical visual materials such as postcards, common people’s photographs, and archival documents from Taiwan under Japanese and the Kuomintang rule, which are re-edited and problematized.
Starting in 2015, Imaginarium primarily focuses on 20 Martyrs’ Shrines across Taiwan, some of which were formerly Japanese shrines. The work explores the relational tensions inherent in these “national mourning sanctuaries,” where the dead and the living, the sacred and the secular, and the autocratic and the democratic systems coexist.
Launched in 2020, As Ritual, attempts to re-engage with personal life experiences through rituals and actions involving headless bowing. The work reflects on the spatial conditioning shaped by power dynamics embedded in colonial architecture while exploring the subtle connections between insidious bodily discipline and biopolitical governance.
Ten years ago, TSAO Liang-Pin published a photographic work titled Sojourn, created during his studies in the United States. The project sought to embody a Taiwanese person alone abroad — feeling rootless, adrift without direction – as if being stateless. After returning home, he documented the Martyrs’ Shrines scattered across Taiwan with great solemnity, as if taking memorial photographs; later on, he stepped into the images and performed a ritual gesture of farewell.
As scholar Han-Yu Huang writes, “The archive, as a kind of mnemonic technique, reveals that memory, which we often regard as essential to existence and historical truth, is in fact a site of contestation of discourses, disciplines, institutions and power. While personal memory may be sutured to collective memory, the two are often marked by tensions and conflicts.”
Reflecting on Taiwan’s colonial history is not to remember the past but rather to rethink it so that one can be liberated from historical knowledge. It is hoped that the publication of this book will encourage more people to listen to the stories of Taiwanese people’s pursuit of democracy, freedom, and independence, and to open up space for new thinking and dialogues.

曹良賓（ソウ・リャンピン）
新竹出身、台北在住。 芸術創作、組織運営、公共活動に携わる。2015年、台湾で初の写真集『中途』を出版。 2016年には「Lightbox写真図書室」を設立し、台湾の写真の保存・研究・普及に尽力してきた。2025年には第1回「TIPF台湾国際写真祭」を創設。同年、2冊目の写真集『Becoming・ Taiwanese』が日本の赤々舎より刊行。
TSAO Liang-Pin
A native of Hsinchu, Taiwan, Liang-Pin Tsao lives and works in Taipei.
His practices span artistic projects, organizational management, and public services. In 2015, he published his first photography book Sojourn in Taiwan. In 2016, he founded Lightbox Photo Library, an organization dedicated to the preservation, research, and public engagement with photography in Taiwan. In 2025, he founded the inaugural Taiwan International Photography Festival; that same year, his second book Becoming • Taiwanese was published by AKAAKA in Japan.
