大地の様相や生命感を喚起させる力強い造形で、国際的に活躍する現代陶芸家・秋山陽の「今」を包括する作品集。
2009年、2013-14年にアートコートギャラリーで開催した展覧会を主軸に、秋山が本書のために書きおろした10篇のエッセイ、4シリーズの解説も収録。建畠晢（京都市立芸術大学学長／埼玉県立近代美術館館長）と北出智恵子（金沢21世紀美術館学芸員）による秋山陽論、また初期からの代表作の数々も留め、秋山の制作と思考の歩みを重層的に紹介する。

秋山陽は、陶という存在に対する根源的な問いを、常に自らの制作そのものに重ねてきた作家である。彼の作品はすべて黒陶であるから、釉薬や絵付けといった"エクスプレッシブ"な技法は一切排除されている。作家としての意識は徹底して大地に属する土という素材の物性と焼成によるその変容に向けられているのである。重厚なボリュームとマッス、そして激しく励起されたマチエールは秋山ならではのたしかな造形力を明らかにしているが、そうした彫刻的ともいいうる要素は、実のところ、陶による表現の本質の探求の結果として自ずと立ち現れてきたものなのだ。

Yo Akiyama is an artist who has continually posed fundamental questions, within his own creative process, with regard to the entity that is ceramics. All his works are realized in black ceramic, and "expressive" techniques such as glazing or painting are completely dispensed with. Akiyama's consciousness as an artist is focused entirely on the physicality, and the transfiguration upon being fired, of clay, that substance that belongs to the land. While the stately volumes and masses and intensely excited material textures in this artist's work clearly point to his inimitable command of form, these ostensibly sculptural elements are things that have actually manifested on their own, as the fruits of a quest for the essences of ceramic expression.

秋山陽｜Yo Akiyama

1953年、山口県下関市生まれ。前衛陶芸における造形理念の基盤を築いた走泥社・八木一夫に師事し、黒陶オブジェで1980年代より美術家として頭角をあらわす。土の表面をバーナーで焙ることで生じる亀裂の発見から、土の現象と造形思考を融合させた独創に専心する。93年より高温度焼成と鉄粉による酸化作用を制作手法に取り入れ、自然と人為、生成と崩壊、内部と外部などの自己制作課題に、空洞や積層といった新たな意識を付与し、壮大な時空と心身に響く陶造形を確立する。
