畑智章のカメラは、彼らの純然たるプライドをも写し取った。


主に2000年代前半のドラァグ・クイーンたちとそのシーンを撮影した「THE NIGHT IS STILL YOUNG」（夜はまだ早い）は、 時代の記録、また肖像として、大きな意味を持っている。
写真に刻まれた彼らの輝きは、私たちと地続きであるはずの熱と尊厳を帯びて、普遍的に訴えかけて来る。そして親密で美しいカップルのシーン。 あらゆる境界が「夜はまだ早い」という魂の叫びのなかに融解して行く。

「日本のドラァグクイーンは80年代のNYのクラブシーンを模倣すると言う形でスタートし、日本と言う、まさに独自の文化を持つ孤島で進化しました。
僕はシモーヌさんが始めた頃のドラァグのシーンを一部の映像でしか見た事はありませんが、 恐らく今回の写真に関して言えば、そのシーンの黎明期から爛熟期 に当たる、狂乱の時代を切り取る事が出来たものだと思っています。 そしてその日本のドラァグ、というのが、再びNYに逆輸入と言う形で戻ってゆき、出版と 言う形で再び世界へと流れてゆく、という循環を作り出せたのであれば、 僕の写真家としての使命はほぼ達成されたと言っても良いかもしれません。
そういう意味で、今回の本を見た若い世代の子達が、付け睫毛とウィッグで武装し、 欺瞞に満ちた社会に対して全く別の「欺瞞で」それを無効化し、笑い飛ば し、陳腐な歌をリップシンクしながら、 日々自分たちに押し付けられる「何か」に対して抵抗し、それを破壊していく―そうやって新しい世界を自らのものにする―そういうきっかけになって欲しいと思います。」

"The Night Is Still Young" is a collection of photos documenting the drag queen scene in and around Osaka. Hata takes the viewer through the full drag queen experience, from preparation to performance to private (and party) time. Still, the focus of the book is on performance, and he photographed a wide range of drag queens on stage. Drag queen culture is an underground phenomenon in Japan--even Osaka is not San Francisco--but "The Night Is Still Young" is a colorful look at this scene which highlights the pride of its members. Includes a text (Japanese only) written by curator Eric C. Shiner.

畑 智章 | Tomoaki Hata

はた・ともあき
1974年、京都府生まれ。大阪大学人間科学部人間科学研究課博士後期課程中退。
1996年頃より京都のクラブ・パーティで撮影を始める。
2004年にCollection Lambert（仏）主催の現代美術展「Akimahen」出展。
現在、ロサンゼルスを拠点に活動。

Born in Kyoto, Japan, in 1974.
With more than 10 years of education in law, sociology, media studies,cultural studies and art criticism in Japan, Tomoaki started his career as a photographer in 1996 at Japan's ground breaking HIV/AIDS benefit dance parties and with candid still photography of Japan's gay porn industry. Recently Tomoaki's photography was highly valued by Eric Mezil, the director of Collection Lambert, the contemporary art museum in Avignon, France. Many of Tomoaki's photographic works were exhibited in "AKIMAHEN" and "EIJYANAIKA," the biggest exhibition of Japanese young artists in France, including Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, Yoko Ono, Nobuyosi Araki. All of photography Tomoaki presented at these two exhibitions have been purchased by Collection Lambert.
