「ここではまず群衆に巻き込まれる。個人が集って群衆となるのではなく、群衆のなかから個人が一瞬鮮明に浮かび上がっては群衆に溶けてゆく。個人が顔を持つように、この群衆は豊かな相貌の顔を持っている。個人は、その生き物の無数の細胞の一つなのだ。あるとき私は、個人の眼差しであることをやめて群衆の眼差しとなって、ひしめく群衆の眼差しのただなか、その渦の中心にカメラを構えて立っていた。それは、世界もろとも自分を再構築したような新しい経験だった。」ERIC（あとがきより）

　The crowds form from laws based in wild nature, law that exists outside the wall of their legislation. There is no confusion here. The people of India accept the caste system as fate.  It is a law that is outside of the domain which they can modify. Indian society seems founded on the laws of men and nature.  In the streets and earth of Indian society every existence manifests itself openly without being covered up. Wealth and poverty, beauty and ugliness, piety and vulgarity, acts noble and humble, the new and the old... all of humanity's opposites are in display in public as dazzling chaos.

　There my own personal eyes faded and I became the eyes of the crowd. I held my camera and stood in the chaos, there in the center of the whirlpool of humanity... a new experience in which I could rebuild myself together with the world.

写真店「西村カメラ」に住み込みで働きながら写真を学ぶ。
