また、プロジェクト「ルワンダ ジェノサイドから生まれて」についての制作ノートも併せて掲載しています。
「写真を見ることとは何か」「他者の痛みを想像するとはどういうことか」という根本的な問いをめぐって紡がれてきたその思考と独自のアプローチを、初めてまとまった形で示すものです。
本書は、造本デザインにも注力し、思想を手渡せるような佇まい、文字の組み方を目指しました。
テキスト内で取り上げられる作品を２点ずつ、カラーで紹介しています。
図版としてではなく、これらの写真がなければ存在しなかったテキストの扉として、一枚ずつページに貼り込まれました。
見ることと書くことを往還しながら、わからなさを身をもって引き受け、静かに生み出された切実な言葉たち。

Silence and Image ─ Essays On Japanese Photographers ─

The first book of essays（bilingual：Japanese and English） by the major critic Mariko Takeuchi. The text of Silence and Image discusses the works of 11 Japanese photographers including Ken Domon, Risaku Suzuki, and Lieko Shiga. All of the essays have been translated into English, and the beautiful illustrations serve as portals to the text. What does it mean to look at photographs? What does it mean to draw near to people in pain? These questions underlie all of the essays. The book also considers gender as it relates to art and photography.

竹内 万里子（Mariko Takeuchi）
1972年、東京都生まれ。早稲田大学大学院文学研究科修士課程修了( 芸術学)。
東京国立近代美術館客員研究員などを経て、現在、京都造形芸術大学准教授。国内外の作品集、新聞雑誌等に写真批評を寄稿。写真展企画も多数。
訳書にジョナサン・トーゴヴニク『ルワンダ ジェノサイドから生まれて』( 赤々舎、2010年) がある。現在、京都府在住。
Mariko Takeuchi
Mariko Takeuchi was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1972, and is currently based in Kyoto. After receiving an
M.A. in Arts from Waseda University, she was a visiting researcher at the National Museum of Modern
Art, Tokyo. She is currently associate professor of Kyoto University of Art and Design. She has
contributed to many photography books, newspapers and magazines as a photography critic, and
curated many photography exhibitions. Published works include her Japanese translation of Jonathan
Torgovnik's Intended Consequences: Rwandan Children Born of Rape (Akaaka Art Publishing, 2010).
