About Book

"The title of this collection of photographs, The second seeing, emphasizes that we live within a 'second seeing' by way of an internalized other that exists behind the first-level perception. Our lives exist alongside this image we have of ourselves, she asserts, likening people to actors and the world to a stage

Ryu isn't satisfied by simply capturing the subject using her camera. Many of the photos taken in Inner Mongolia, where she grew up, Japan and Paris, where she studied, and Egypt, where she travelled, include what appear to be snapshot-like elements-situations encountered unexpectedly, meaningless gestures, subjects with their eyes only half open, and compositions in which the subject is not facing the camera directly. However, it is also true that about half of these photos were taken under circumstances devised by the artist or with interventions by the artist. She also makes edits to the resulting photos, including negative-positive reversal, superimposing images that have been made transparent, and emphasizing noise or particular details. In this way, it almost seems as if she is presenting a profusion of image manipulations at this show.It is an ambivalent mix formed from a stance torn by two perspectives, one viewing photography as truth, the other seeing it as fiction. On the one hand, elements like flesh and mucous membranes, sweat and blood, and animal carcasses touch on the graphic nature of the world (i.e., the truthfulness of fiction). On the other hand, it captures artificial flowers, paddling pools, artificial turf, and iconic images, lamenting how the world is fake (i.e., the truth of fictitious worlds). The conflict brought about by this strong contrast conveys both a sense of the world's realness as well as a feeling that things are being manipulated.

Through the text she distributes at the exhibition venue, Ryu drives home like a stake the fact that photos are not completely transparent, and that 'my' manipulations that intervene in the process in which photos are taken, edited on the computer, printed on paper, and presented before the viewer are 'me.' "I don't feel like I just reproduced the scenery I took on paper, or "I" am the point that is most important in the process from reality to data and from data to reality...we want to tell the world that we don't want to ignore the process and we don't want you to ignore it." Completely transparent photographs are an impossibility. People live in a world of their own preconceptions. That might sound like an often used cliché. However, Ryu Ika stakes out her resistance to an increasingly fake world, approaching photography in a way that allows her to thoroughly digest the 'self' manipulating the photos."

Hanabi-Kei ("Views of Fireworks")

Kazuma Saeki

Photographer Kazuma Saeki first worked as a news photographer. In 1987, he started to take photos of fireworks. After he obtained a qualification in pyrotechnics in 1997, he started to call himself a 'hanabist' (firework-ist), and since then he has been taking photographs of fireworks not only in Japan, but all around the world. He has also been studying the history and culture of fireworks.

Saeki daringly chooses conventional film cameras to bring out the charm of analog film and associate with the astral world of fireworks. With no multiple exposure functions in camera, he releases a one-time-only shutter to capture the very moment of firework sparkles. The book is full of exclusive techniques that Saeki effectively commands.

10 Photographers capture the shape of time, 2020 and 2000

Photographers from seven different cultures including Japan, France, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, and the United States, responded to this call by photographer Ai Iwane.

A new photography magazine will be launched in which ten photographers, Ishiuchi Miyako, Antoine d'Agata, Shen Chao-Liang, Luo Dan, Seung Woo Back, ERIC, Ryuichi Ishikawa, Jinhee Kim, and Mandela Hudson, will juxtapose their photographs of the years 2000 and 2020.

In the year 2020 when the world experiences a drastic transition, "Decades" will deliver the time axis of "20 years" in the format of a magazine with photo stories and essays that condense the decades in each region.

Dear Friends

It is a pity that there haven't been many opportunities to see you recently.

I hope you are doing well.

Reacting to the changes in daily life,

I often wonder how you are,

as well as my friends living far away and overseas.

I remember there was another time when I felt close to you even though you were far away.

It was 20 years ago. At that time, too, everyone was saying that the world was going to change.

So this year, I decided to ask photographers who are living at this time what they had done this year, as well as in the year 2000.

About Book

" 近い存在であるはずのひとが、動物が、風景が、ふいに遠く感じることがある。それは寂しさや不確かさ、そして触れがたさとなって、短い風のように目の前に現れる。いくら被写体とカメラの距離が近くても、ひとがこちらに笑いかけていても、遠いときはとことん遠い。間に窓があるみたいに、見えるのに触れない。

(木村和平『あたらしい窓』あとがき より)

The Other Side of the Window

Kazuhei Kimura

A dear person, animal, or a familiar view sometimes feels very distant. It's a sense of uncertainty and inviolability that suddenly strikes me like a gust of wind. When it happens, the object is really distant, no matter how close it is to my lens, or even if it smiles at me. I can see it but I can't touch it, as if there is a wall of glass between us. Photography reveals the existence of this glass, albeit quietly. But whether I grasp its nature or not is a whole other question. I can stay tranquil as long as I leave incomprehensibility as it is. This is not a depressive account. It is sad, but there is also a certain brightness in the distances of intimacy.

I don't always have my camera with me, nor do I intentionally go out to "take pictures". Instead, I spend most of my days not taking any photos at all. Most of the pictures in this book were taken before 2018. There are much fewer photos from the middle of 2019 onwards, and there were several reasons for that. I didn't feel like taking photos, or couldn't spare time for it, or the photography didn't seem to fit personal relations. I approve of the days when I didn't take pictures. Sometimes, the moment is gone before you can pick up a camera. That being said, it's not that photography isn't a core part of my life. I'd be incapacitated without my camera!

What did I want to do with this book, I wonder? It's certainly not to keep myself always on the lookout to capture a particular moment, nor to create a setting for ideal pictures. I'm not eagerly pursuing a totally new mode of expression either. I react to scenes which I unavoidably come across in everyday life, such as communicating with others, time that doesn't seem to move, a shadow that sways, or a ray of frozen light. I fix my eyes on them and release the shutter. Is it a record of life? Maybe not.

I feel great interest in and attachment to my childhood memories, as well as the everyday life that I'm living. The former makes a unique album, whereas the latter is for an album-to-be, for which I'm in charge of selecting everything. I choose where to live, what to eat, how to wear and whom to get along with. I could get off the train at an unfamiliar station. I could dance with cats.

Countless choices and experiences create a particular person, one who resembles no one else. Everyone has a collection of unique episodes, and I've been deeply moved by the texture of such episodes that live on in artistic productions such as clothes, movies and music. Although private in origin, they are pliable, they have a certain transferability. The good productions strike a chord in us and show us a vision of the unknown. That is what I want to do with photography.

About Book
